MIPL is all set to design, manufacture and supply berthing pontoons for DGNP. In response to the recent tender notified by DGNP, Modest’s bid was declared L1 in October. The requirement is for the design and manufacture of 7 pontoons (2 berthing, 1 anchorage and 4 gangway pontoons) for the new INS Vikrant.
INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC1), requires these for its berthing and anchorage, and for the inward / outward movement of men and material.
These pontoons, similar to GSL class series of four non self-propelled craft built by Goa Shipyard Limited, are catamarans with rectangular twin flat-bottom hulls, connected by trusses of round pipes with a steel deck over the transverse beams. They are intended for berthing vessels with displacement of 40000 tons, serving as spacers between the jetty and the ship.
The order to design and construct these pontoons for INS Vikrant is a prestigious assignment for MIPL.
