Dempo Sports Club beat Sporting Clube de Goa by a solitary goal in the charity match played at Duler stadium, here on Sunday.
Afghan international Haroon Amiri scored the lone goal in the 55th minute from the penalty spot.
Sporting had better of the exchanges in the early stages of the match, where in the 13th minute of play Dempo defender Haroon Amiri brought down Mauvin Borges just outside the penalty box. A scorching direct free kick by Sumit Ghosh banged the upright with keeper Laxmikant Kattimani beaten.
Dempo finally got their act together and had four good attempts at the rival goal, but their strikers failed to deliver the goods.
In the 20th minute, Romeo Fernandes sent a cross from the right flank to unmarked skipper Clifford Miranda, whose feeble shot however was parried for a corner by Sporting keeper Melroy Fernandes. A couple of minutes later Holicharan Narzary blasted the ball wide.
Five minutes before the breather, Sporting keeper came with two excellent saves to parry Samir Naik’s deadly cross and then thwarted Holicharan in one-to-one situation.
Sporting coach Oscar Bruzon further strengthened his defence by bringing new signing Spanish Pablo Gallardo however in the 55th minute, Sporting stopper back Chandrashekar Chinta was red carded by referee Sunil Nanodkar for pushing Dempo’s Clifford Miranda inside the danger zone. Afghanistan international Haroon Amiri made no mistake to put Dempo ahead, 1-0.
The Golden Eagles, almost netted their second goal as Debabrata Roy set up Holicharan who outsmarted Sporting defender and curled the ball at the goal, which struck the side post.
Dempo received the winner’s trophy from GFDC chairman Dr. Rufino Monteiro in the presence of other GFA executive members.
Earlier, before the start of the match Deputy Chief Minister Adv Francis D’Souza inaugurated the two stands in the name of Late Edward Carvalho and Late Vasudeva Dempo.
