Your handwriting and signature reveals much more than you might imagine. Graphology, the science behind analysing handwriting for personality traits has been around since the days of Aristotle. Today, it’s used for a variety of purposes, from criminal investigations to understanding your health.

A certified handwriting analyst and a forensic handwriting and signature expert based in Mumbai, Neha Phatak Rakshas was the guest on The Navhind Times talk show, Talk from the Heart which aired recently on the Goa 365 channel. Founder of ‘Inside Ink Graphology Solutions’, Phatak Rakshas has over 22 years experience in the field and is also a graphotherapist who has counselled many to overcome their problems and succeed in life.

With a M.Tech from IIT Bombay and a diverse background spanning logistics, analytics, banking, and finance, her firsthand insight into various roles has enabled her to empathize with clients from various walks of life. Asked what motivated her to switch careers and pursue this field, she replied, “Since my school days I was very interested in handwriting and signature analysis and I cultivated a deep understanding of its potential to unveil the complex nuances of personality traits. Over the years, my proficiency sharpened, and what started as a side hustle became a calling.

While Graphology is the science of understanding the human mind through an individual’s handwriting, grapho-therapy explained Phatak Rakshas is used to improve certain skills, attitudes, way of thinking, health, mind, relationships and much more. With various illustrations she simplified the two branches of handwriting. “Grapho-therapy is a technique where you can overcome your weaknesses or the negative traits in you or you can remove your negative patterns by practicing certain letters and a customized signature in a correct way. It works on reverse sub-conscious programming principle; changes in action will bring changes in thoughts and changed thoughts will create desired changes in personality,” she said.

To analyse handwriting, graphologists look at the size and shape of the letters, handwriting pressure, position and shape of the i-dots, and t-bars, etcetera. Giving an example, she said, “If we are looking at pressure used while writing, the light-pressure individuals are normally flexible in nature and not very assertive as compared to those who are heavy-pressure users.” With regard to the shape of letters, she explained, “Let’s take the example of the alphabet e. In the small e if the loop is closed or cannot be seen it means the person is extremely rigid and very stubborn and mostly disagrees with others around them causing problems for themselves and others as well.”

Giving some tips on how to gradually change one’s attitude and improve oneself through handwriting, she recommended those who write the small e with a closed loop, to keep the loop more visible and added, “Practicing this over a period of time, you will see that your rigidity and stubbornness is reducing. Now this does not mean that you’re going to become self-sacrificing or you’re going to compromise but what happens is that your filter improves whereby you are able to accept good suggestions positively and the rigidity and stubbornness decreases.

Many more tips and pointers were shared to improve one’s handwriting and thereby bring other positive changes as well.
